Questions & Answers

  • What happens in the case of accident?

What would happen even if a container arrived at Port of Södertälje that required Border Control Station control/passage?
The EU and Swedish rules are very clear on this. It is forbidden to transport containers by road or rail to the nearest Border Control Station. The container must be reloaded on to the ship and back to a Border Control Station, either at Hamburg or Bremerhaven.
  • Why doesn’t Port of Södertälje have its own Border Control Station?

The simple answer is that the port’s volumes are too small. It would be incredibly expensive for customers to take advantage of such a service. Just to construct a specially adapted building would cost over 8 million kronor. If volumes increase significantly then this situation could change.
  • So what are importers of animal foodstuffs advised to do?

The simplest way is to take advantage of existing Border Control Stations before the goods arrive at Port of Södertälje, for example in trans-shipment ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Gothenburg.
  • What type of goods must pass Border Control Stations?

Imports of animal foodstuffs from a third country (with the exception of EU countries, Norway and Iceland) to the EU goods must undergo Border Control checks. Border Control checks are also required for the import of living animals and/or animal products (except foodstuffs) from non-EU countries.
