Encouraging figures from Port of Södertälje

The year 2010 was the year volumes increased greatly at Port of Södertälje and losses turned around to profit. The sector that performed the best were car imports which enjoyed an increase of 46 percent. The downturn, a result of the recent financial crisis, is now over and Port of Södertälje’s managing director Erik Froste remains confident that results for 2011 will point to a further increase in volumes and a higher turnover.

The logistical and transport businesses are a reliable pointer to the current state of the market and this was proven during 2010 where all Port of Södertälje’s result figures increased. Turnover increased by 25 percent, container volumes 17 percent and car imports by 46 percent.

‘During 2010 we signed contracts with three of the largest shipping companies therefore taking advantage of the upswing in business and thus being able to take market shares from other competitive ports in the region,’ says Erik Froste, managing director of Port of Södertälje and who turned the losses of 2009 into profit during 2010.

Volkswagen’s sales successes on the Swedish market and the contract with UK RoRo shipping company Mann Lines, who also have a contract with Ford, have been of great significance to the heavy increase of car imports to Södertälje. During 2010 a total of 77, 152 cars were imported to Sweden via Södertälje. The new contracts with the three container shipping companies saw 67,128 TEU handled by Port of Södertälje during 2010.

‘We have a total of 4 container shipping companies that berth at Port of Södertälje on a weekly basis and our ambitions for 2011 are high. This year we expect to handle 85,000 TEU,’ says Erik.

The concern Söderenergi opened its new bio-fuel fuelled power station in 2010 and this has led to the Port’s improved figures through the volume increase of wood chippings and pellets.

The month of January is traditionally a month of sluggish business with drastic decrease in volumes, but this year we see a continuation of the positive trend of 2010.  On a normal January day an average of  200 containers pass through the gates of Port of Södertälje. This year it has been noted on numerous occasions this figure to pass 350 containers.
