The issuing of the new permit means that the port will be able to receive 1,200,000 tonnes of oil per year. This is treble the amount of today’s volumes which stand at roughly 400,000 tonnes per year. Oljehamn

’This is an important decision for both Port of Södertälje and the Stockholm region,’ says Erik Froste, the port’s managing director.

On the 13th of April, Stockholm’s County Administrative Board voted to grant Port of Södertälje a permit to increase present and future operations at the Oil Terminal according to the Environmental Code (1998:808) Chapter nine. The permit allows Port of Södertälje to handle up to 1,200,000 tonnes of oil per year. This is three times greater volumes than the Port handles today.

’This is very good news that means that we can now take steps in the further development of Port of Södertälje. The decision is of course good for Södertälje but even for the whole region as two large oil terminals are threatened with closure,’ adds Erik Froste.

The County Administrative Board’s decision means that Port of Södertälje will take on an even more important role in the supply of the region’s oil needs. The new permit also means that the port’s Oil Terminal customers such as Shell, Vopak and ODEC can continue to grow and increase their operations.

’Our expectations are to attract new customers to Port of Södertälje. We have a handful of inquiries but nothing that has resulted in business as yet,’ says Erik Froste.

No large investments are needed to be able to handle the increased volumes as the depth of water at quayside and in the shipping lane is sufficient to sustain these new volumes. Continued reinvestment, for example quayside fender arrangement, will be made and fire protection and other safety routines will be further developed.
