The Port of Södertälje has signed a contract with the German shipping line Hapag Lloyd. The contract will enable the Port of Södertälje to strengthen its position as the Greater Stockholm’s logistical hub.
The harbour’s container volume will increase by 15%, or with between 6000 and 8000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) per year.
The recession and financial crisis has hit the port industry hard. The Port of Södertälje is no exception even if the Port of Södertälje has done better than many other ports. The Port of Södertälje has now signed a contract with Hapag Lloyd which will see all transports to and from the Stockholm region will be transported via Södertälje. The contract between the German shipping line will see an increase of the Port of Södertälje’s container volume and its securing of further shares in the market.
’This is a very important contract which will see a 15% increase in our container volume and up to 8000 TEU per year. The contract means that we fortify our position as the Greater Stockholm’s logistical hub,’ says a very contented Eric Froste, managing director of the Port of Södertälje.
Hapag Lloyd has a fleet of over 115 ships and handles a global container volume in excess of 5 million TEU annually. Hapag Lloyd had earlier divided up transports between other Swedish east-coast ports but through concentrating container traffic to the Port of Södertälje Hapag Lloyd will incurr lower costs, simplified administration and speedier handling. The contract became valid from the 1st december 2009.
