To summarize the Port of Södertälje’s results for 2009 shows that total volumes increased during the year. A total of 1,1 million tonnes of goods were handled by the port, which is a 10% increase compared to 2008 figures. The increase is mainly due to larger volumes of bulk and oil entering the port. Car imports and container volumes were down but recovery was seen during the autumn.
Goods volumes at the Port of Södertälje increased by 10% during 2009 compared to the previous year. This upturn is due to the incease of oil and regular bulk handled at the port. Container volumes and car imports were down by 6% and 13% respectively.
‘We see clear signs that the market is turning. In January of last year a total of 1,500 cars arrived in Södertälje. Since November this figure has almost quadrupled and is back to normal volumes. At the end of last year we signed significant contracts with two shipping companies that could see container volumes for 2010 increase up to 20%,’ says Erik Froste , managing director of the Port of Södertälje.
That Port of Södertälje is now growing during the recession means that the port is in a position to secure further shares in the market and fortify its role as Greater Stockholm’s logistical hub. Port of Södertälje is well prepared for when the current tide of recession finally turns.
’When volumes were low during the year, we used that time for the training and honing of the skills of our staff. In December Per Fredman joined our team as Sales Manager which means we can now increase our activities on the sales front,’ says Erik Froste.
2009 in figures:
Containers 58 671 TEU (-6 %)
Oil 435 000 tonnes (+15 %)
Regular bulk 280 360 tonnes (+ 16 %)
