The world’s second largest container shipping line MSC, will start to dock on a weekly basis at Port of Södertälje.
The port’s managing director Erik Froste now estimates that container volumes will increase by 20% for the remainder of 2010 and for 2011. The increase in the numbers of shipping lines that have chosen Port of Södertälje is proof that the port is taking market shares from other ports in the region thereby strengthening its position as a major hub in the Greater Stockholm Region.
Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC, the world’s second largest container shipping line, will commence weekly docking operations at Port of Södertälje on the 14th of October. That MSC chose Södertälje is yet just another example of how the port has become the logistical hub of the Mälar Valley and the Greater Stockholm Region.
’That the second largest container shipping line is to commence weekly dockings at Port of Södertälje will result in increased volumes for us. It also means that we are succeeding in taking market shares from other ports in the region,’ says a very pleased Erik Froste, managing director of Port of Södertälje.
MSC is one of four container shipping lines that dock weekly at Port of Södertälje. MSC’s route goes from Bremerhaven to Södertälje and Norrköping and then back to Bremerhaven. The load is mainly made up of consumer goods such as foods, textiles and electronics.
Port of Södertälje’s container volumes during the first nine months of this year have increased by 12%. Together with MSC and other shipping lines operations will be further developed for the port to grow further. The goal for growth is a priority.
’We aim to increase container volumes by 20% for 2010 and 2011. Our goal for this year is 71,000 TEU and next year we will be able to handle 85,000,’ says Erik Froste.
Container volumes for January through September 2010 are 50,445 TEU. During the third quarter volumes increased by 33% compared to the same period of the previous year.
