Port Development Supports Sustainable Freight Logistics

Published: 10/13/2026 4:10:42 PM

The Green Goods Hub project has been underway since 2023, and several sub-projects have now been completed. Port of Södertälje has carried out feasibility studies on strengthening quays, installing shore power, and extending railway tracks within the port.

The project is a collaboration between the Municipality of Södertälje and Port of Södertälje. It is partly funded by the EU funding programme Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). A key factor in securing funding for Södertälje was its unique position as the only location in central Sweden with a shipping channel, a railway connection, access to the European road network, a seaport and a logistics centre.

"We want to contribute to shifting more freight from road to sea and rail. These projects help create fossil-free freight logistics in Södertälje and strengthen Södertälje's position as a sustainable transport hub," says Joakim Ströberg, Head of Business Support at Port of Södertälje.

Strengthening the Port's Quays

The shipping channel between Landsort and Södertälje is being widened, deepened, and partly rerouted. The work is being carried out by Sjöfartsverket on behalf of Trafikverket. The objective is to increase cargo capacity at Port of Södertälje and the ports of Lake Mälaren.

The new shipping channel will accommodate vessels with a draught of up to 10.5 metres, compared with the current 9 metres.

To accommodate larger vessels, Port of Södertälje must also deepen parts of the port area and reinforce its quays. Dredging operations and reinforcement of the Ro-Ro ramp are planned, while construction of a new mooring dolphin is already underway.

Installation of Shore Power

Port of Södertälje has also completed a feasibility study for the installation of shore power facilities for Ro-Ro vessels, container ships, and tankers. With shore power available, vessels will be able to switch off their auxiliary engines while berthed and instead use clean electricity supplied from shore.

The shore power initiative has now entered its implementation phase through the E-MAR project. The project is jointly managed by the Municipality of Norrköping, Port of Norrköping, and Port of Södertälje. In March 2026, the project received funding from The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

Extension of Railway Tracks in the Port

Port of Södertälje is also planning an extension to the railway network within the port and a new gantry crane. These investments will create better conditions for fossil-free freight transport and further strengthen Port of Södertälje as an intermodal terminal.
