A new member to the machine park makes work easier

At the beginning of the year the latest addition to our fleet of vehicles, a Reach Stacker, arrived at Port of Södertälje and is not only capable of lifting containers but also goods of a more unique kind.

Incoming goods are becoming more specialized and unique in their designs. Besides containers, concrete, housing modules and building materials should also be handled with care and dexterity and this requires well-trained port personnel who are in charge of the machinery. The new reach-stacker, which replaces the old one, has been equipped with additional lifting eyes and beams so that loads up to 4.5 meters wide can be easily lifted. The operator’s cab sits very low off the ground thus giving the operator a maximum field of vision and is also very quiet.

- Under the yoke we have enough cylinders that allow us to tip the yoke sideways to compensate for an oblique load, says Bertil Jansson, foreman at Port of Södertälje. This is especially useful when unloading housing modules, concrete and other construction elements.

The reach stacker has major advantages for the port, which now has even better conditions for receiving and lifting more than a little of anything, and considering recent developments in the construction sector we can really expect anything to arrive.

- So far we have received everything from bridge elements, 60 meters long and several hundred-tons in weight, as well as housing modules and concrete units, says Bertil. It’s exciting with varied cargo, but we also need equipment to do the job as quickly and safely as possible.
