Increase in new car registrations for the 19th consecutive month

The industry organization BIL Sweden continues to report increased figures of new car sales in Sweden. Improved car import figures are also clearly noticeable at Port of Södertälje.

So far this year, car imports revealed higher figures compared to all months of 2014. During July the new registration of cars in Sweden rose by 18 percent which is the 19th consecutive month of increased registrations. Car volumes handled by Port of Södertälje so far this year have increased by 29 percent compared to 2014. The largest growth has been recorded by rail operations which saw an increase of 62 percent whereas port operations noted a strong growth of 18 percent.

- This year’s July is the best month of July since the new car registration system was introduced at the beginning of the 70s, says Bertil Moldén, managing director of BIL Sweden.

That the car market remains to be strong is a sign that the country’s economy is doing well. We have households with disposable incomes, low interest rates in addition to plentiful stocks of used cars. The Volkswagen Group firmly believes the very positive outlook for the car market will be maintained.

- Besides that we have redirected more car volumes to Södertälje compared to our other import ports of call is our strategy to increase VW’s market share and during 2015 we envisage to import over 100 000 cars to the Swedish market. It’s positive news for the environment too as our strong electric car program has been very well received. The shares of customers who now drive cars with lower fossil fuel combustion engines increases daily, says Daniel Wennerqvist, logistics manager at Volkswagen Sverige AB.
